Final Assignment: Reflection and Explanation

Everybody has a different taste in humor. Some people enjoy comedy of ideas while others appreciate satire. A satire is a piece of work that ridicules its subject in order to highlight an issue; it could be in the form of exaggeration, incongruity, reversal and parody.  Sh*t LG’s Say is a satire in the form of exaggeration. Our motive was to not only make people laugh, but to touch upon the subject of feminism. Before the feminist revolution, women were looked upon as an object to be won. Many women believed they could not be independent without a man. Fortunately, the years have changed and women have forgotten these typical stereotype; however, there are still some groups of girls who fall back into these ways. They believe that they should be unintelligent and show off their sex appeals. Sh*t LG’s Say is the exaggeration of these actions through the eyes of the older and wiser grade 9s.

Sh*t LG’s Say, meets the criteria of exaggeration because it these actions do happen it is not as pronounced as in the video. An exaggeration is to increase and enlarge a situation or a subject to the point where it becomes ridiculous. For example, we exaggerated their use of Photobooth and self-taken photographs.  Though many girls do tend to take the odd “selfie” it is not as bad as we portrayed it.  Furthermore, this example not only embellishes the actions they perform but it makes fun of it to the point where it becomes ridiculous. Which is another example of why Sh*t LG’s Say, meets the criteria of a satire in the form of exaggeration.

In the past few months there has been a trend of viral videos on YouTube called Sh*t ______ Says, these videos are funny for the fact that they are true and everyone can relate to them.  Many people already find the term LG funny because they are stereotypically defined as, girls between the ages of 10 and 14 who are known for attempting to act older than they are. They are usually found in mini skirts, low-rise tops, and a ton of make-up. Our example of a comedy is funny to our generation because everyone already finds the mannerisms of these girls funny and when we exaggerate these actions it becomes hilarious. These girls unconsciously make fools out of themselves by trying too hard to be something that they are not. The fact that they don’t realize their ridiculous actions is funny to older bystanders. Our video is funny because we collected all the well-known actions of them and complied them back-to-back. While watching this, it’s hard not to laugh.  Moreover, this video is funny to a much older audience because the video is a view of these girls through the eyes of people who are only one year older. It’s not like we have had way more experience and therefore much more knowledgeable or wiser.

In reflecting the process of creating a comedy, we discovered that it is not that easy to come up with an idea that everyone would find funny, due to different opinions based on humour. However, once we found the idea of Sh*t LG’s Say, there was no stopping the ideas from flowing. Throughout our process we have had ups and downs. At first the girls were reluctant to be in the video due to the fear of embarrassment. It was especially difficult to convince them when they were all together; however, when they were in smaller groups, they were more open to being in the video. We found that once we started filming the girls were enjoying themselves, which in turn made the process more enjoyable for us.

We also found it difficult to hold back our laughter while filming. We sorted the problem out by realizing that if we were not to complete the filming we would not get a satisfactory mark on this project. Nevertheless, though we had some challenges we persevered, and completed a project that we believe is our definition of a comedy. Our favourite part of this creative process was working together on something we both found funny. On the set of Sh*t LG’s Say, you always found us having fun.

In closing, here is our video, from some true LG’s to you, we hope you enjoy. Just laugh your little hearts out because YOLO!

Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk; David Sedaris

Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk
1.      What type of comedy is your book? (use specific examples to prove your answer)
2.       Would you recommend it? (use specific examples)

Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk by David Sedaris is combination of low comedy and a comedy of ideas. This book is a series of short stories all of which have a different comedy type. One of the stories, The Grieving Owl, is an example of low comedy. In this short story an owl, who recently lost his wife, travels around the country and talks to his prey before he kills them, if they teach him something interesting he lets them go. The low comedy in the story comes when the owl is talking to a hippo. The hippo told the owl that she has leeches living in her rear end. But David Sedaris didn’t stop there, the hippo asked the owl if he could go listen to the leeches to see what they were saying, when he went to listen, he hear that they were singing. This is an example of low comedy because firstly, it is a gross joke, which would never happen in real life, and secondly, because of the language he uses to explain the leeches, he says “the two hit it of immediately, and within minutes the gerbil was vis a vis the anal parasites.” This book is also a comedy of ideas because, the whole book mocks today’s society. David Sedaris uses the animal kingdom to portray events that happen in everyday life. The thing that makes it funny is that animals would never act this way.

I would recommend this book, I found most of the short stories hilarious, but some of them were very inappropriate.  David Sedaris uses vulgar language that some people would find offensive, but others find hilarious. In the short story “The Toad, The Turtle, and The Duck,” the three animals are waiting at the DMV, they are speaking about what they would do to torture the man at the desk who kept turning them away. They used rude racial slurs, and I did not find this story funny at all. To tell the truth I thought it was very arrogant and uncouth. I don’t think that all people would find this funny. I would recommend this book to Katie because I think that she enjoys this type of comedy, but I would definitely not recommend this to any person younger than me. Some of the jokes went right over my head, therefor anyone younger than me probably wouldn’t get the book at all.

Mitt Romney Dog “It Was My Choice!”

The recent controversy of Mitt Romney strapping his dog on the roof of his car shocked the nation, and negatively affected his presidential race. This post is an example of incongruency. Firstly, the dog is talking; this is something that would never happen in real life. Also, it is saying that the dog decided for himself to be put on the roof of the car. This example is funny because honesty when would there ever be a talking dog? It is also funny because of the sly comments the dog makes.

This video is a parody of the new IPhone 4 software, Siri. It is a parody because it is imitating Siri in a way that would never happen in real life. It is personifying an inanimate object and giving Siri a mind of her own. It is funny because it is ridiculing something that we all think is supposed to work flawlessly. It is also funny because it is playing off of how advanced technology is now and how Ellen lost control of her Siri.
